So, if you take the A3 highway south of Napoli and past Vesuvio, you come to the Salerno area and the southeastern edge of the Costa Amalfitana - the Amalfi Coast. The first small town you come to west of Salerno is Vietri sul Mare. The town is famous for its ceramics, and being a town of ceramiche, many of the "duds" end up being thrown into the sea. They tumble around in the surf for a good number of months or years, along with broken damigiane, and roll up on the beach. This makes the beaches of Vietri sul Mare a veritable gold mine for both sea glass and sea tiles. D and I visited a few weeks ago to add to my collection of "beachcombed" things.
The day was absolutely miserable - rainy and cold - but we still had fun. A good walk on the beach with the wind whipping your hair and the tide coming in does everybody some good! The photo above is a small model town on a street corner.

Our found loot from the beach! Lots of pretty tiles, and some sizable pieces of sea glass (see chunks of clear, white, green, and blue). We'll definitely be going back!
