Today, I took a short walk about 1/4 mile up the street to the SISA market to pick up some eggs, as I'd run out while making gluten free chocolate chip cookies. While in the market (a small one, not quite mom-and-pop size, but about the size of a house) I passed an employee on my way to the wine rack. As it is impolite not to greet shopkeepers, I wished him a "Buongiorno".
"Salve," he croaked out, barely paying attention, and I continued down the aisle. About a second later, he turned towards me with a sideways grin. "USA?" he asked, looking me up and down and lingering on my blonde hair.
"Si," I said with a smile, and nodded.
"I LOVE USA! I love USA and I make USA here," and he lifted his shirt sleeve to show me a tattoo of the American flag on his inner bicep. "I make USA here for Miami, I live Miami for six month and I love it!" You could feel his excitement.
Thank you, awesome Italian shop dude. I love the USA too, and while I don't have a tattoo to show it off, it makes me proud to know that you do. :) Fantastico!
